In with the Old

I have noticed a trend lately. Administrators who survived the transition from home grown products to vendor products seem to be resisting open source. At the end of the home grown product era, the developers were retiring and leaving feet first, and eventually you would realize you were down to one guy who knew how to keep up the system. But oh boy was it customizable in its heyday (so they say). Then the vendor stepped in to take care of everything, and maybe the solution wasn't quite one size fits all, but anything is customizable for a price. Oh wait, we aren't your biggest customer base/revenue stream? Our enhancement requests didn't even make the list for this FY? Bummer. So now open source comes along, and while some liken it to religious fervor, with the talk of consortial programming it does seem like the best of both worlds. Potentially, if enough people invest. Stay tuned.
